Chapter Eight
The Girl In The Woods
"Should've figured you'd find a way to make yourself into another living PSA,â the female figure quipped as she approached them. "I can see the headlines now, 'Mayor's Son Sets Forest Fire; Smokey Outraged'."
"Liv?! What the hell are you doing out here?" Wes' shocked expression transformed to one of pleasant surprise as their "ghost" turned out to be none other than one of his old friends. He quickly blew out the candles and hopped up to greet her.
"So, are we not summoning Mabel now?" Jasper asked, as the flames extinguished. Wes was too distracted to respond.
"Not being as dorky as you are, that's for sure,â she countered, eyeing their makeshift séance space.
Jasper wasn't relieved like his friend. In fact, he felt irrationally irritated by the intruder's presence. That's exactly the word that came to mind when he watched the two of them hug in greeting: Intruder.
He swung his legs to the side and shifted on the rock so that he could face them.
"We're not being dorky. We're being spooky,â, Wes corrected with a charming smile. He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pointed at the camera she had hanging from a purple strap. "Did we ruin your amateur voyeuristic outing when you realized you knew one of the participants?"
"Ew. Is that what you were doing?" Liv scrunched her nose up in mild, but curious, disgust.
"Liv this is JJ. It's his birthday,â Wes introduced them, carefully sidestepping an answer. "JJ this is Liv Robles. We've been friends since Fourth Grade."
"Had been,â Liv corrected, pulling out from underneath his arm. "You haven't talked to me at all since you switched schools. And Instagram "likes" don't count."
Jasper was staring. A little too harshly. He could feel the pressure from the tension between his knotted eyebrows as his gaze narrowed. He wondered how rude it would be to tell her to go away because it was his party and she wasn't invited. Probably pretty rude. So, he kept his mouth shut.
She was pretty, he noted. Not in the same superficial way as Wes' other female friends but in the way he knew was lasting. She was naturally beautiful. The kind of pretty that didn't need much help from makeup and fashion; and she didn't seem to employ it either. It was hard to tell in the dark but she looked as though she just had a little bit of smokey eyeshadow on over her large almond eyes and some pink lip gloss. He tried to appraise her further. She was a little shorter than Wes, very curvy, Hispanic, and had long curly brown hair that took on a beautiful glossy sheen in the moonlight. She was wearing jeans, hiking boots, a V-neck mauve t-shirt, and denim jacket.
He didn't know anything about her other than the grin she elicited from Wes with her presence. That alone was enough for Jasper to decide he didn't like her. He wasn't ready for competition.
"Don't get off topic,â Wes deflected. For whatever reason, he clearly had no interest in delving into the reasons behind their estranged friendship.
